We train pupils to help their peers resolve disagreements — as calm, neutral third parties. It builds confidence and empathy in the young mediators, and makes whole schools calmer places to learn.

What it is

Children helping children to work things out.

Trained student mediators help classmates sort out disagreements by acting as neutral third parties. It develops social skills that make communication healthier, and empowers young people to create positive change in the lives of their peers — skills they carry home, to friends and family, and through life.

Schools tell us it improves relationships between students and staff, reduces disciplinary problems, and builds community spirit.

The Resolution Centre is one of six providers who contributed to the first national evaluation of peer mediation in UK schools, drawing on 300+ pupils across 29 schools.

Our first school

Grouville School, Jersey.

At Grouville — our first school — a playground dispute over football became the moment everything changed. Rather than a teacher imposing a fix, the peer mediators helped the whole year group talk it through and agree their own rules, together. It's exactly what peer mediation does: it hands young people the capacity to resolve things themselves.
